Just wanted to give an update on my progress with my Grand Central webapp, now named iGC Mobile:

    TO DO:
  • Facilitate logging into GC
  • Allow random outgoing calls (without using contacts)
  • Set forwarding number
  • Get contacts list from GC
  • Send all calls to voicemail (Do not disturb mode)
  • Display contacts list
  • Facilitate calling from contacts list
  • Add new contacts
  • Recent calls list (missed, outgoing, incoming)
  • Inbox and voicemails
  • Make it all pretty
Now in private beta, so if you have an iPhone/iPod touch and a Grand Central account and want to participate shoot me an email

GrandCentral Quick Dialer

If you have no idea what GrandCentral from Google is, I recommend you read up on it, or ignore this post before continuing. I picked up an iPod Touch for cheap the other day, since I wanted to get into iPhone programming, but didn't want to mess around with The Evil Empire (AT&T)- and for all intents and purposes they are the same device (minus the cell radio, obviously). So I've been playing around with the webapps before diving into actually objective-C based native programs. I was trying to think of what I personally would like in an application, and I realized it would be great to use Google's GrandCentral service on the iPod to make calls when at home without opening my computer. I don't know if you've ever tried to use the GC Mobile site on iPhone/iPod Touch- it is UNBEARABLE- Constant zooming in and out. So I made my own (with some cool extra features). Check it out.

Unexpected Downtime

Posted by: mhespenh
July 2, 2008

Hey everyone, I have to apologize for some unexpected downtime earlier this week.  It seems my host decided I was getting too much traffic, so they needed to investigate to make sure I was not hosting "malicious content."  I don't really get it either.  Oh well, we're back up, and I hope to add some  (real) updates soon. Sorry for any inconvenience this downtime may have caused you.

My Calculator Has a Backlight

Using a few LEDs, resistors, transistors, a photoresistor (essentially a light sensor in this application), a piece of plexiglass, and a whole lot of patience I have added a green backlight to my TI-83+ graphing calculator. Check it out on the project page, or get detailed instructions here.

Papas Got a Brand New Twitter Feed

Posted by: mhespenh
April 24, 2008

So I've decided to officially get in on the Web 2.0 fad, and have signed up with Twitter. For those not "in the know," Wikipedia describes Twitter as such:

"...Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send "updates" (or "tweets"; text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) to the Twitter website, via SMS (e.g. on a cell phone) [or] instant messaging.
Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and instantly delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them..."
Basically it's like the Facebook status updates, but on a grand-scale. I've added the Twitter feed to the blog page on the left to augment the infrequent blog-proper posts. Enjoy the new insight into my madness.

I've started adding content to the projects page. The first one, "Backlighting a TI-8x Graphing Calculator" is being added as I finish it. Be sure to check back often to keep abreast of my progress.

So this is it. I'm Michael, and this is my site. Welcome. Here you will (eventually) be able to find resources on various geeky projects I undertake in my spare time/ coursework, such as:

Computer programs in C++, Assembly, Java, and whatever other languages I learn in the future.
Instructable and Make style projects using microcontrollers, LEDs, and other assorted electronics.
In addition to that, I will try to include some useful links relevant to the aforementioned topics, such as references to outside sources, other similar projects, and how-to's. And finally, my random thoughts, complaints, and praises for anything and everything in the blog.

Please keep in mind that this site is still under construction, so check back often for updates and additions. Also, bear with me if some pages are still 404'd, links are dead, or sections aren't fully implemented.

So have a look around and if you have any comments, complaints, or suggestions feel free to let me know.

Site Update III

April 08, 2008

New (preliminary) site design. What do you think? Blog and home links are live now, although the content on them is probably just placeholders for now. I'm working on the templates for the site now, actual content will come after that. 404 (Page not found), 403 (Forbidden), and 401 (Unauthorized) error pages have been added.
